Stacked Kitchen Cabinets │ DreamMaker of Suburban Chicagoland

Design Ideas for Stacked Kitchen Cabinets

stacked kitchen cabinetsMore homeowners are opting for stacked kitchen cabinets. This provides extra storage space while filling in the excess space in a high-ceiling kitchen. We’ll go over some design tips for boosting the cabinets’ function and cosmetic appeal.

Why a Stacked Kitchen Cabinet?

Homeowners often request a tall cabinet system to eliminate clearance space between the ceiling and the top of the cabinet. However, a single tall cabinet system can make the kitchen feel heavy and overbearing. Stacked kitchen cabinets help break up that heaviness.

3 Design Ideas

1. Display Case

The most common design idea is to use the upper cabinets in a stacked cabinet as a display case. This makes sense since they are inconvenient to access. Add glass cabinet doors for the uppermost cabinets and install puck lights. This will highlight the displayed items. If you decide against glass doors, use any other design, as long as it differs from the cabinets directly below.

2. Wine Rack

For the upper cabinets, consider an open cabinetry system with a built-in wine rack. We recommend a wine rack for one cabinet and open shelving for displaying wine glasses in an adjacent cabinet. Complement the latter with a mirrored backsplash. We especially recommend this design scheme for kitchens with a built-in bar.

3. Floor-to-Ceiling Cabinets

Double stacked cabinets are the most common. However, triple stack cabinets also exist, as do four and five-stacked cabinet systems that extend from floor to ceiling. Consider these for areas free of obstructions from the counter and appliances. This helps with organization and storing items within their respective categories.
